Preservation of Historical and Cultural Heritage: Domestic and International Experience

On April 16, 2026, the Department of Archaeology, Ethnology and Museology of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, in cooperation with the Research Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology and the Research Center for Museology and Monument Studies, held a national round table on the topic: “Policy of Preservation of Historical and Cultural Heritage in the Context of Independence Values: Domestic and International Experience.” The event was dedicated to the International Day for Monuments and Sites.

The International Day for Monuments and Sites is observed annually on April 18. It was established in 1983 by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) under UNESCO to raise awareness about the preservation and protection of historical and cultural heritage.

The round table brought together representatives of the academic community, faculty members, and students. Among the participants were Dean of the Faculty of History, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor D.S. Baigunnakov; Head of the Department, PhD R.S. Zhumatayev; Deputy Head of the Department for Research and Innovation and International Relations, Senior Lecturer B.B. Besetayev; Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor A.B. Kalysh; Director of the Research Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor G.K. Omarov; Candidate of Historical Sciences, Professor T.E. Kartayeva; E.M. Turgunbayev, as well as doctoral, master’s and undergraduate students.

In addition, representatives of профильные organizations took part in the event: PhD, Leading Researcher of the Margulan Institute of Archaeology E.Sh. Akymbek; Candidate of Legal Sciences, Associate Professor E.T. Alimkulov; Member of the Union of Architects of the Republic of Kazakhstan A.S. Shadyarov; Academician of the Academy of Arts of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Head of the “Ostrov Krym” Scientific Restoration Laboratory K.K. Altynbekov; Senior Researcher of the Issyk State Historical and Cultural Museum-Reserve T.Zh. Tulegenov.

During the round table, актуальные issues of preserving historical and cultural heritage were discussed, and both domestic and international experience in this field were reviewed. The participants emphasized the importance of a comprehensive approach to heritage preservation and exchanged professional opinions.
